Biography

Tadhg Slater is a painter and playwright working between Provincetown, Boston, and New York.

The painting came first. His practice is rooted in traditional materials—linen, rabbit skin glue, marble dust gesso, lead white—built through successive bodies of work, each pushing against the limits of the last. In winter, he works from an unheated, windowless concrete bunker on the beach in Provincetown, where conditions become part of the process. The work is physical and layered. A refusal to stop at the familiar.

In May 2026, Slater was awarded the Dune Shack Residency in Provincetown—one of the most isolated artist residencies in America. He went out to the outer Cape to paint. No electricity. No running water. No piano. Nothing but six days at the edge of the dunes with whatever he brought in.

He didn’t paint.

What he needed to say wouldn’t fit inside paintings alone. In six days of total silence, cut off from everything, he wrote a 319-page musical. The residency didn’t confirm who he already was—it made him into something else. A painter who, in the right silence, turned out to also be a playwright.

That work is Concrete Winter: The Musical—a companion to the painting series of the same name, born from the same winter, the same conditions, the same refusal to limit the form to what was already known.

Slater holds an MFA. He works directly with collectors. The studio is the primary site of exchange. He has also been awarded a residency at Château d'Orquevaux, France (2026).
