Residencies

Working in the tradition of the New York School painters who came to Provincetown with total commitment.

Context

The New York School came to Provincetown to work.

Jackson Pollock, Robert Motherwell, Hans Hofmann — the artists who defined a generation of American painting all spent time in Provincetown. They came for the light, the isolation, and the commitment that the place demands. You cannot be casual in Provincetown.

Residencies are not retreats. They are conditions for work. A dune shack with no electricity and no running water on the outer Cape is the same proposition it has always been: remove every comfort and see what you make.

The work comes from the place. The place shapes the work. These residencies are not interruptions to a practice — they are the practice made visible.

About the Practice

The work comes from
the conditions.

Tadhg Slater works year-round in an unheated concrete studio on the Provincetown waterfront. The Concrete Winter series is the result of sustained work through the harshest months of 2026. To understand the residencies, it helps to understand the studio.
